This is our second Chapter Zero Bulletin. There has been a huge amount of interest in the network, and membership is growing steadily.  We have a substantial programme of events for the autumn, and our new website is now live: www.chapterzero.org.uk.

If you are a board director, and are interested in being kept informed about our events, become a member of Chapter Zero.

We are heavily reliant on word of mouth to promote Chapter Zero, so we need your help to spread the word. Please encourage your board colleagues and other non-executive contacts to join by sending them the link to our membership form (here).

Chapter Zero briefing series with Deloitte

On 13th September we held the first in a series of Climate Crisis briefings we are running in collaboration with Deloitte. The event discussed bringing climate change on to the board agenda. The key note speaker was Simon Thompson, chair of 3i and Rio Tinto, who was joined by Emily Farnworth, who heads the Climate Governance Initiative at the World Economic Forum, who both took part in a panel discussion joined by Steering Committee member Susan Hooper.

On 14th October the second Climate Crisis briefing will consider climate change risks and opportunities, scenario analysis and strategy, with Richard Gillingwater, chair of SSE and Daniel Klier, Global Head of Sustainable Finance, HSBC as the key note speakers, joined by an expert panel.

The third event in this series will take place on 20th November, and will be on the topic of choosing metrics and targets. Speaker details will be available shortly.

The fourth and final event will take place in December and will cover financial statement impact and reporting.

Chapter Zero Risk Workshop with WBCSD and Deloitte

On 13th September we held, jointly with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and Deloitte UK, an interactive workshop for non-executive directors, particularly Audit and Risk Committee members, on the implications of climate change for enterprise risk management. The content draws on new expert guidance developed by COSO, the professional body for risk management practitioners, and Ernst & Young, and has been specially adapted by Deloitte UK to meet the needs of non-executive directors.

Use of the Chapter Zero tool kit

We have had very positive feedback on the Non-Executive Directors’ Tool Kit, developed for Chapter Zero by management consultancy The Berkeley Partnership.  If you have tried out the tool kit, send us feedback at climate@hughes.cam.ac.uk so that we can improve it further. We will also be putting a feedback form on our web site soon and would welcome your views.

Implementing the WEF Principles of Climate Governance

One of our goals is to promote the WEF Principles of Climate Governance for Boards which were launched in January. If any of your boards are unaware of the Principles please encourage board members and company secretaries to review them.

United Nations Climate Action Summit

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will convene a stocktake on progress against the Paris Agreement in New York on 23rd and 24th September. This will be a significant event during New York Climate Action week with a number of parallel seminars and meetings, including one hosted by WEF.

If any members are in New York that week do send your feedback on the events to Chapter Zero. We will include highlights on our website. The UN is positioning this as a key step in the journey to COP26 in 2020, which will be hosted by the UK in Glasgow.
